Serie A 15/3/2009: Inter Milan vs Fiorentina

Inter Milan
Inter Milan are only -3/4 on the handicap, and I see great value. Not only do they have a very solid attacking unit, they are further backed by a very favourable recent history against Fiorentina. Inter Milan have won 8 of the last 9 meetings with Fiorentina at the San Siro, including the last 6. In the last 12 games between the sides, home and away, Inter have won 9 times, with Fiorentina winning just once. Inter may have lost to Manchester United, but it was away at Old Trafford and quite frankly United would have swept aside any team in Europe going by their current form (even though they were walloped senseless by Liverpool yesterday). I expect Zlatan Ibrahimovic to do really well today, as he is far and away Inter’s top goalscorer this season. I am backing the home side to ease to a regulatory home win.

Fiorentina
Cesare Prandelli’s Fiorentina are going through a rough period. Although they are still in fourth place, lately their football has lacked the confidence and consistency we are used to seeing from the Viola. This negative period culminated last weekend in perhaps their worst performance of the season against Palermo, who won 2-0 at the Stadio Artemio Franchi. It was only their second home defeat of the season, after the one against Lecce in January.

Their recent tradition against Inter hasn’t been too good, although this season they managed to end a string of four successive league defeats by them with a scoreless draw in Florence. With Genoa travelling to Cagliari and Roma to Genoa to face Sampdoria, all teams aiming for the Champions League have tough matches this weekend, but Fiorentina play on Sunday night so by then they will know what they have to do to maintain fourth place in the table.

Team News
Inter coach Jose Mourinho’s defensive crisis continues with Nicolas Burdisso, Cristian Chivu, Ivan Cordoba and Marco Materazzi unavailable through injury. Walter Samuel and Nelson Rivas will make up the central partnership whilst Sulley Muntari will replace Luis Figo in midfield.

Meanwhile, Fiorentina coach Cesare Prandelli will make a couple of changes to the side that lost to Palermo in the last round. In defence, Per Kroldrup will take over from suspended club captain Dario Dainelli whilst Manuel Pasqual makes way for Juan Vargas at left-back.

My prediction: INTER MILAN -3/4
