Fiorentina and Siena have met nine times. The Viola have won four times, but only once with a lead of more than one goal while the Robur have managed to take all three points on three occasions and been victorious in each of the last two derbies.
Fiorentina
In their past seven matches in all competitions, Cesare Prandelli’s men have emerged victorious on just one occasion. That triumph came three weeks ago in the league against Chievo Verona, when a late brace to Adrian Mutu guided the Florentines to a 2-1 home victory. However, tonight is a crucial match for Fiorentina, as defeat could see them slip to sixth place and potentially five points adrift of the Champions League qualifying positions.
Siena
Siena were undoubtedly one of Serie A’s surprise packets in the early stages of the campaign, as they found themselves comfortably in the top half of the standings for much of the season’s first half. Since then, however, their results have been fairly inconsistent, and their position in the league table has suffered significantly. Siena are seven points clear of the drop zone now with 10 games remaining this season, so a win would take another step closer to safety.
Team News
Prandelli has very few problems to deal with for this contest. In fact, with the exception of the two long-term casualties Mario Santana and Sergio Almiron, the Viola have a full-strength squad available. The captain Dainelli returns from the suspension that kept him out of his side’s 2-0 defeat to Inter last weekend, to bolster the defence for the upcoming Tuscan derby.
Siena, too, have a fairly clean slate on the injury front heading into this match. They have a long-term casualty in Luca Rossettini, whilst the influential midfielder Galloppa will return from suspension, after missing out against Milan last weekend. A number of players are one booking away from a ban, including the club’s two main hitmen, Massimo Maccarone and Nicola Amoruso.
Prediction
Both sides will be keen to win for differing reasons, but you get the sense that both will also be desperate not to lose this match.
