Spanish La Liga 4/4/2009: Malaga vs Real Madrid

Malaga
Malaga have played quite stable in the recent rounds in La Liga. Last they got knocked out by Barcelona when they manage to lose with 6-0 away. Malaga are now in the 8th place in the table, place 9-5 is very tight in the table and only one point can mean a climb in the table so Malaga still have much to play for.

Real Madrid
They have recovered their confidence in defence and they have rediscovered their attacking flair, having scored 21 goals in their last six La Liga outings and conceded only four times. Real also got an convincing record against Malaga and have not lost to Malaga in the last 10 meetings.

Team News
Striker Salva Ballesta will be available for selection after recovering from back problem. Welington and Pablo de Barros also have been passed fit. The good news is that Moroccan forward, Nabil Baha, has shaken off the hamstring strain and Javier Calleja will return from a one-game ban.

Gabriel Heinze is suspended for card accumulation while regular stand-in Marcelo is sidelined. Miguel Torres should deputise, or Juande could move Sergio Ramos to the left and deploy Michel Salgado on the right. Winger Arjen Robben is also doubtful, meanwhile Fernando Gago, will have to run a late fitness test to determine his condition. If he is unfit Guti could get a chance to start alongside Lassana Diarra.

La Liga 21/3/2009: Villarreal vs Athletic Bilbao

Villarreal

Manuel Pellegrini’s side have not won a league match on their travels since beating Recreativo Huelva back in November, but at home they have been much stronger and have taken 13 points from a possible 15 in their last five outings.

Athletic Bilbao

Athletic find themselves in 12th place, just five points from safety. The Basque side know all too much about relegation battles, and will be loathe to get drawn into another one. Their paltry record of just two away wins does not bode well for their trip to El Madrigal.

Team News

In Villareal, Javi Venta is suspended, while Angel, Joseba Llorente and Pascal Cygan are all doubtful.

Athletic are without Fran Yeste, Ion Velez and Carlos Gurpegui due to suspension.

Prediction

The Yellow Submarines thrashed the Basques last time around and a repeat scoreline is not out of the question here.

My prediction: VILLAREAL -3/4

Bilbao have poor record against Spain’s Big Two (Barcelona and Real Madrid). Last week’s defeat at Barca was Bilbao’s 10th defeat in 11 matches against the Big Two. At home, they have record W0, D1, L4.

Real Madrid are seeking their 5th consecutive win on the road in La Liga. Under Juande Ramos, Madrid have away record, W4, D0, L1. Forget it about Champions League and now focus on La Liga.

Real Madrid have an opportunity to win this match.

My prediction: REAL MADRID -1/2
