The big Ukrainian derby will occur in European stage this time where Ukrainians are awaiting to determine the winner of this tie for the UEFA Cup final. The rivalry between Dynamo Kiev and Shakhtar Donetsk is like Barcelona/Real Madrid, Galatasaray/Fenerbache, or Manchester United/Liverpool. Both teams have won every single Ukrainian Premier League title, except for the very first one in 1992. The two clubs have finished in the top two spots in all but four seasons, with Dynamo leading the way with 12 titles followed by Shakhtar’s 4. Shakhtar have had their way with Dynamo as of late, winning three out of the last four league titles, including last season.

Dynamo Kiev

Yuri Semin’s team are in a very relaxed season since they have already secured their domestic title, as they are now even 12 points ahead of their rivals Shakhtar and look set to claim the Ukrainian league title once again. Dynamo showed a lot of quality this season and they definitely stand huge chance of eliminating their biggest rivals.

Shakhtar Donetsk

Shakhtar, conquerors of Tottenham and CSKA Moscow, beat Marseille 4-1 on aggregate in the last eight. They have never won any European title, and this season represents one of their best opportunities to grab their first one.

Team News

Captain Taras Mikhalik will still miss the big clash against Shakhtar and defender Pape Diakhate will also out injured. Roman Eremenko and Artyom Kravets are still battling to be fit for tomorrow’s match.

For Shakhtar, they have no injury concerns at this stage, however, five players are a yellow card away from a ban which means all of them will not play in the 2nd leg next week should they receive another booking.

Hamburg are starting to look like a formidable outfit, both in domestic competition, and on the European stage. They are now on top of the table, same points with Bundesliga leader Wolfsburg and surprisingly emerged as one of the candidates for the title.

Manchester City

Manchester City is a different team when playing away from home. Mark Hughes’ side have been without a victory on their travels since winning at Schalke 04 in November, the last time they visited Germany, 13 unsuccessful away days have followed as City have slipped well off the pace in the battle to qualify for a European spot.

Team News

Hamburg will be without Bastian Reinhard, Guy Demel, Thimothee Atouba, Romeo Castelen, Maxim Choupo-Moting, and Alex Silva due to injuries. However, Paolo Guerrero and Colin Benjamin have been passed fit.

Both ex Hamburg players, Vincent Kompany is a doubt and Nigel de Jong is cup-tied. Martin Petrov and Stephen Ireland have travelled with the team but the duo’s match fitness is very much in doubt as they have both just recovered from injuries.

Prediction

Hamburger are in great form now. Even though they will miss a couple of players but these are all essentially back-up players. Man City are terrible in away game and they will miss several first team regulars.

Both teams are sitting on mid-table of their own league and have no chance of getting hold of UEFA Cup position. It is interesting to see how they will try to achieve their best result in this UEFA Cup to be able to compete in European competition next season. The winners of this tie will meet either Hamburg or Manchester City in the semi final.

Werder Bremen

Bremen haven’t lost a single match to Italian teams this season. They won against Inter Milan in Champions League group stage and eliminated AC Milan in UEFA Cup. In contrary, their form in domestic competition this year is far from their best, they struggle because of injuries and suspensions of their key players.

Udinese

Udinese are the only Italian team left in Europe. Despite bringing a pride for their country, they have not won any single away match in all competitions since November last year! Their poor away form will be even worse with the absence of their captain Antonio Di Natale until end of this season.

Frank Baumann will be back into the lineup after a one-match ban, while Markus Rosenberg still in doubt because of back injury. Should he plays, he will be partnered with Claudio Pizarro.

Meanwhile, Udinese will be without captain Di Natale and goalkeeper Samir Handanovic. However, Maurizio Domizzi will return from suspension. Striker Fabio Quagliarella is also available and Floro Flores is also expected to recover from injury

Prediction

Udinese have lost all of their last three UEFA Cup matches away from home. I believe that trend will continue tonight.

Shakhtar Donetsk

Not only do Shakhtar need to stop the prolific Love, they need to find the net themselves. They did have chances in the first leg but the elusive away goal never came. Both these sides won their respective league games 3-0 at the weekend. The lack of an away goal could well come back and haunt Shakhtar.

CSKA Moscow

Wagner Love’s penalty winner in the 1st leg leaves this tie delicately balanced. Love is top scorer in the competition and if he adds to his tally in the Ukraine, it could be enough to take his side through.

Team News
Razvan Rat is unlikely to make it back to the Shakhtar squad in time for this second leg clash, adding to coach Mircea Lucescu’s woes: key defender Dmytro Chygrynskyy is also out due to suspension.

CSKA, meanwhile, are without Yury Zhirkov, but having gone the entire year unbeaten in a competitive match – the Russian league only starting at the weekend, spirits are high.

Prediction
Both sides are evenly matched. This makes me hard to predict the outcome. However, looking at the European experiences from both contestants, I am backing CSKA Moscow to progress to the next stage.

AaB Aalborg
A rash of injuries have put a major dent in Aalborg BK’s hopes of overturning a 2-0 loss against Manchester City FC, with visiting manager Mark Hughes pushing his side towards a place in the final in Istanbul.
The Danish champions have defied expectations to survive so long in Europe this season, but their number may now be up with as many as five first-team players set to miss their Round of 16 home game against City.

Manchester City
City had never played a Superligaen side but broke their Danish duck when they met FC Midtjylland in the second qualifying round. They traded 1-0 home defeats with Midtjylland before prevailing 4-2 on penalties. City then overcame FC København in the Round of 32, drawing 2-2 in Denmark and winning 2-1 at home. Thus their record against Danish sides now reads P5 W3 D1 L1. Their two away games in Denmark ended in a draw and a win.

Team News
Strike duo Luton Shelton and Caca will be called on to create havoc for the City back four, a defense that Aalborg and Pehrsson know has been shaky this season and could be the key in overcoming the English side.

Manchester City’s Wales striker Craig Bellamy will not feature in their Uefa Cup tie against AaB Aalborg. Robinho (ankle) is fit, Vincent Kompany (toe) faces a late test and Nigel de Jong is not registered to play as City take a 2-0 lead into the second leg.

Prediction
Aalborg have also been unbeaten at home in the last 7 matches. I also feel that they will chase a win in this 2nd leg. This also based on the fact that Man City’s away record is pretty bad. They have won just 1 of their last 17 away games in all competitions, including no wins on any of their last 10 travels.

My prediction: Aalborg +1/4

UEFA Cup 20 March 2009:

The Round of 16 getting into fulls wing on tonight. Two more predictions and picks will be posted in this blog.

The first pick is for the match between AaB Aalborg and Manchester City. AaB will need to chase the game to keep their UEFA Cup faith alive after being outclassed by the Premier League team by 2-0 last week. You can read the analysis and prediction here.

I will also post my pick for the match between Shakhtar Donetsk vs CSKA Moscow. The Muscovites hold a 1-0 advantage from the first leg, but Shakhtar will feel that they have a chance to turn it around at home… Enjoy the analysis and pick here.

UEFA Cup 19 March 2009:

French outfit Olympique de Marseille will do their utmost to defend a 2-1 lead against Amsterdam giants Ajax.

Ajax
Goals from Benoit Cheyrou and Mamadou Niang meant Marseille sneaked past Ajax 2-1 in the first leg. Ajax got a crucial away goal thanks to a penalty goal from Luis Suarez though. I feel Ajax did good in that game seeing as they had Gregory van der Wiel sent off in the 42nd minute. Ajax have been superb at home, losing just 1 of their last 27 games in front of the home crowd. They have won 21 games during this time, and they should be really confident of overturning the one-goal deficit in this one.

Marseille
Their opponents Marseille have done superbly of late though, losing just 1 of their last 9 matches in all competitions. Away from home they have notched 4 straight wins in a row, edging past Monaco, FC Twente, Caen and PSG, and visit Holland in confident mood. Marseille are also hot in pursuit of Lyon in the French Ligue One, trailing by just 1 point and having a better goal difference to boot.

Team News
Ajax manager Marco van Basten is troubled by some injuries and suspensions to his players. Rasmus Lindgren, Gabri and Jan Vertonghen are all out injured, while Dario Cvitanich is fighting to be fit. Suspensions will rule out both Gregory van der Wiel and Thomas Vermaelen. The only good news is that Eyong Enoh is back in midfield. Luis Suarez will be relied upon greatly for the scoring of that equalising goal to level the tie and effectively put the Dutch team ahead on away goals. For Marseille boss Erik Gerets, he is without Laurent Bonnart. Karim Ziani, Ronald Zubar and Mamadou Niang are all struggling to be fit. Steve Mandanda will have a massive role to play in between the sticks. Benoit Cheyrou and Bakary Kone must both win the midfield tussle for the French side, while Mamadou Samassa and Boudewijn Zenden must pull their weight upfront if Marseille were to grab a vital away goal.

Prediction
I really like Marseille as a team, but in the context of this game, I have to reluctantly side with Ajax. The fact that Ajax have the home advantage is crucial. They also come into this match chasing a result, seeing as they lost the first-leg 1-2. That away goal they scored would give them a lot of confidence and self belief I am sure, because they know 1 goal today would not only level the tie, but put them ahead on the away-goals rule. If the Dutch side could keep it real right at the back like they know they can in front of the home crowd, Marseille’s hopes of progressing into the next round look dim. The French team would hope for Mamadou Niang to recover in time for the match, but even with his inclusion, I think the drive within the Ajax team should prove too strong. Marco van Basten will set his side out for the win, and I expect them to get it.

My prediction: AJAX Level

Saint Etienne
Struggling in the French Ligue One relegation zone, Saint Etienne come into this one desperate to give their suffering fans something to smile about. They should feel a little bit better playing this match at home though, seeing as they have now gone 8 home games unbeaten in all competitions. They ran Werder Bremen close the last time they met in Germany, losing narrowly 0-1, and they have every right to feel they are still in with a fighting chance for progress.

Werder Bremen
Their opponents Werder Bremen are not doing too well in the German Bundesliga. For a relatively big team like Bremen, their current position of 10th in a league of 18 teams is not very encouraging. With the German side having won just 1 of their last 5 games away from home in all competitions, they cannot afford to be complacent playing a struggling Saint Etienne side.
Team News
With Saint Etienne boss Alain Perrin more keen to ensure League survival than European glory, he may choose to rest some first-teamers. Definitely out are Cedric Varrault, Geoffrey Dernis, Dimitri Payet, Mouhamadou Dabo and Emmanuel Riviere. Returning to the side are Sylvain Monsoreau and Efstathios Tavlaridis, while Sebastien Grax is pushing for inclusion. Impressive striker Bafetimbi Gomis should lead the line, supported by Araujo Ilan and Sebastien Grax. For Werder Bremen manager Thomas Schaaf, he has to do without Petri Pasanen, Daniel Jensen, Frank Baumann and Clemens Fritz. Even though Claudio Pizarro has a court case coming up, he is expected to play, partnering Hugo Almeida upfront, backed in midfield by the impressive Diego and Torsten Frings. If Diego could edge the midfield battle, Bremen look set to win both legs.

Prediction
This is not an easy match to call, seeing as Saint Etienne have the home advantage but Werder Bremen quite clearly have the better players. The reluctance of Alain Perrin to field his strongest side may also significant affect the game’s outcome. However, I feel Bremen’s poor record in France might haunt them yet again. In 5 away games in France, Bremen are winless, having lost 4 and drawn 1. Home and away against French teams, Bremen have picked up just 4 wins. Saint Etienne went on a run of 12 European games without defeat before losing eventually at the hands of Bremen in the first leg, but should still come into this one knowing progress is very much doable. I feel if a quality side represent Saint Etienne, then they can match Bremen stride for stride – if a young side represent Saint Etienne, then they would be motivated to do well to impress the coach. I am going to back the home side.

My prediction: Saint Etienne +1/4

An early goal from defender Naldo gave Werder Bremen a slender 1-0 advantage to take with them into the second leg of their UEFA Cup last-16 tie with St Etienne. It’s unfortunate since the German side could and should have scored more, but it wasn’t to be. Hugo Almeida was guilty of missing the most chances as Bremen probed from start to finish, but only had one goal to show for their efforts.

It’s a draw according to the odds I picked last night (Bremen gave -1).

However, I should be happy with CSKA Moscow’s result with Vagner Love’s penalty early in the second half which was enough to give CSKA Moscow a 1-0 first-leg advantage over Shakhtar Donetsk in the last 16 of the UEFA Cup. With CSKA gave -1/2, it’s absolutely a deserved WIN for me!
